On the first of April 1967 in Vung Tau Vietnam the first Navy
Squadron to ever be activated in a combat zone was officially
commissioned as Helicopter Attack (Light) Squadron Three.
UH-1B (Huey) Gunships were received from the 1st Cavalry
Division to be converted to Navy aircraft, by the end of 1967
a total of 22 aircraft were on hand and 7 detachments were
operating as separate elements.

  • Detachment 1 - Jennings County (LST 846)
  • Detachment 2 - Nha Be (pronounced na bay)
  • Detachment 3 - Vinh Long
  • Detachment 4 - Garrett County (LST 786)
  • Detachment 5 - Harnett County (LST 821)
  • Detachment 6 - Dong Tam
  • Detachment 7 - Binh Thuy
  • These were not permanent assignments as the detachments were
always on the move. Later after I left in 1969 I understand newer
and more ships arrived and more detachments were formed.
Our main mission was to support Naval Forces in the Mekong Delta,
however we spent much of our time in support of other forces.
Army, Marines, ARVN, SEALS, PBR's, RAG boats, Swift boats, and yes
even the Green Berets were all provided support by HAL - 3. One time
I remember working with the ROK Marines also( Republic of Korea).
I was assigned to Det - 6, Dong Tam was destroyed by an attack
as were our Huey's and we were then attached to the Garrett County.
We were young and "bullet proof", we had the job of a lifetime,
we could accomplish anything, or so we thought.
Were else could a young man step in and save lives at the cost of his
enemy, while feeling like John Wayne.
When one does not know if tomorrow will even exist he becomes
the "Brave Warrior" and life means little to him.
I have seen the young die and the old survive, I have seen the night skies
turned bright with the tracer rounds of machine gun fire.
I have been one of the "Horsemen of the Apocalypse" and I fear for
    I do not regret it.
